You have seen these types of images in postcards, calenders, or posters everywhere.
They sell well and appreciated well, but they are relatively rather easy to shoot.
You don't need luck, patience, or perseverance, nor do you need high-performance
cameras or fancy lenses. All you need is a tripod, and a camera with a standard zoom lens
that supports B setting for longer shutter speeds.
One thing that may be useful to know, that some time after the sunset when the
natural brightness outside has dropped to a level that is comparable to the interior
lightings of the buildings or the street lightings,
that is the time when you will get the most dramatic shots.
The picture above was taken at such a magic moment in the city of Pittsburgh.
This is the place where a twenty two year old photographer, yours truly, landed
when he was twenty two years younger.
The one below is a picture of the Seattle downtown, with the Space Needle observation tower
in the foreground. Typical exposure time for this kind of photography would be about 10 seconds
at f/8 and 100 ISO. Evenings of weekdays are better than weekends, since most of the building
interiors stay lit in the weekdays.
This picture was taken from the top of the space needdle at a later time in the
evening when the natural light is fairly low and the street lights are becoming dominant.
The last one is a residencial neighborhood by the lake,
which is not as brightly lit as the downtown area, and needed a much longer exposure time.
