C o l o r ? Greyscale?

Converting a color digital image into greyscale (commonly known as Black and White) is easy. Most of the image editing software will do it with a single click, following a formula that mixes the three color channels: red, green and blue.

But, more importantly, the maker of the image should consider the pros and cons of rendering a color image into greyscale. Would it improve the visual appeal of the picture? Would the conversion facilitate the message or feeling that the image is trting to convey?

Here is a picture that I took cuple of years ago at the streetfair of the international district. When you look at the original image, what immediately creates an impact on the viewer is the vibrant colors. That is the strength of this particular image.

Then, it is converted to greyscale. With all the colors gone, now you can appreciate the other positive aspects of the image like the texture of the fabrics, the ornate work on the girl's costume and head-dress, and artwork on the flags. Both versions of the image have their own merits, though the focus is different.
